Unusual large antique copper engraved map of the 7 provinces of Lower Countries, with a small part of Belgium, by Pierre DU VAL (1619-1683), 17th century. The map is enriched with a magnificent title cartouche with the arms of William III. Under the title, a woman (Queen) wearing a cartouche with place of publication, publisher and privilege. In left side, a banner on which is written the Dutch overseas possessions respectively in the West and in right side, a banner on which is written the Dutch overseas possessions respectively in the East. The Provinces Unies des Pays-Bas, was a predecessor state of the present Kingdom of the Netherlands, which existed from 1579 to 1795. The republic was established after the revolt of the Dutch provinces of the Spanish Netherlands against the domination of Spain. The provinces formed a mutual alliance against Spain in 1579 with the union of Utrecht and declared their independence in 1581 with the Hague Act. They included Holland, Zeeland, the Lordship of Utrecht, the Duchy of Gelderland, the Lordship of Overijssel, the Lordship of Friesland, and the Lordship of Groningen. Pierre du Val was a French geographer, cartographer and publisher. He was the nephew of Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville. They worked together at the court of the King of France.
