Description: The Boeing KC-97 Stratofreighter is a four engine, piston powered United States Air Force (USAF) strategic tanker aircraft based on the C-97 Stratofreighter. It was introduced into service on 14 July 1951, and retired in June of 1978. The USAF received a total of 811 Boeing KC-97 tankers. The KC-97 carried aviation fuel for its own piston engines, but it carried jet fuel for its refueling missions. Due to its slower speed, some jet aircraft had to lower their flaps and landing gear to slow down enough for the refueling process. In 1956, the Strategic Air Command (SAC) began phasing out its KC-97's in favor of the jet powered KC-135 Stratotanker. The USAF Tactical Air Command, the Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard continued to use the KC-97 until its retirement in 1978. The Boeing KC-97G variant was developed for a duel role. It provided aerial refueling and was also configured as a cargo transport. The "G" model was configured to carry underwing fuel tanks. A total of 592 of the KC-97G models were manufactured.
