Description: One original, complete hardcover volume. Free shipping to any of the 50 U.S. states. This is an oversize book - 11 1/2" x 8". It is 2 1/2" thick. This is NOT a reprint. This is an original volume printed in 1896. The overall volume is titled: FOURTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BUREAU OF ETHNOLOGY TO THE SECRETARY OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1892-93. By J. W. Powell Director IN TWO PARTS - PART 1. Published by the Government Printing Office Washington 1896. 61 preliminary pages numbered in Roman numerals plus 637 regular numbered pages. The more significant article in this volume I believe consumes about half of the book. This article is titled THE MENOMINI INDIANS. Written by Walter James Hoffman, M. D. This volume contains the title page for the article, 3 pages of Contents, 2 pages of Illustrations Index, and then text pages 11 through 328. Thus still over 300 pages total. The information contained in this article is from observations made of the Menominees from visits commencing in 1890. Topics covered include "mythology, social organization and government, customs, industries, and gentile system and division gentes and phratries, together with linguistic data..." These observations may be the first comprehensive history ever recorded of the Menominees. Any historian or researcher of the Menominee tribe (of Wisconsin) needs to have this book. Always better to have in the original format (which this is) than in a reprint. Of course the writers of the time will have misconceptions, prejudices and biases. But all history must be considered in the context of the times. There is a wealth of info in this volume. Tremendously illustrated. For this Menominee Indian section there are 55 total illustrations - most full page. Most are black and white photos. The second half of the book is one other article: THE CORONADO EXPEDITION 1540 - 1542. By George Parker Winship. Runs from page 329 through 637. There are 46 illustrations in this section, a number of them showing activities of Southwest Indians. Coronado was a Spanish explorer. If I recollect correctly he was the first European to travel through the American Southwest and the first non-native to view the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. Very good condition overall. No interior markings or staining. (There is a just a very small number of light brown spots in the book.) No torn or bent pages. No library markings. All text and illustrations clean and clear. All pages in this book are of heavier than normal stock, thus they have held up well. The binding is holding, but is loosening some, largely because of this book being so darn big. Covers and spine are decent with some wear. See photos please. Returns accepted with full refund if you are not satisfied. (You would need to pay return shipping.) Sorry, no sales to Canada or anywhere other than 50 U.S. states. If you visit someone, and you see no books in their house - Run Away! Run Away! RM-1
