Description: The first town plat of Phoenix, Arizona in 1870 contained 98 blocks and a number of streets and alleys, but no area designated for burial of the dead. Lacking oversight, the first informal pioneer burial ground was soon regarded as an eyesore and a disgrace to a city the size and enterprise of Phoenix. A group of cemeteries established fifteen years later near the edge of town served the population's needs for the next thirty years. This book relates the behind the scenes story of the earliest European style cemeteries in Phoenix and their eventual preservation by the Pioneers' Cemetery Association as Pioneer & Military Memorial Park. Proceeds to benefit the Pioneers' Cemetery Association, a non-profit organization with IRS 501(c)(3) status.
