Description: Vintage Hiroshige woodblock 'The Sea at Satta in Suruga Province' Satta Beach, Suruga, from the series 'Thirty six views of Mount Fuji' by Utagawa Hiroshige The wave-beaten coast of Oya-shirazu at Satta on the west side of Suruga Bay has already been depicted in several prints by Hiroshige, but this is his most forceful evocation of the place and is Hiroshige's tribute to Hokusai's 'Great Wave' Viewing Mt. Fuji from Satta Pass, Hiroshige shows a chaotic cresting wave, with a cliff and a mountain slope intersecting in the foreground. The eye gets drawn through the of crashing surf, and in the distance the sea becomes a scene of tranquility. A sailboat floats upon the mirror-like surface. The wave nearly brushes the white sail and Hiroshige unites the composition with Fuji standing majestically in the distance. Published by Takamizawa. Beautiful vivid colors and crisp detail. Size is roughly Yatsugiri-ban - approx 3.5" x 5.5" Framed in a standard 10" x 12" frame.
