Countries The Art of France Museum of original From collection of the Hermitage museum Size of original, cm 29.5x38 Theodore Rousseau (1812 - 1867) Theodore Rousseau developed an appreciation for the French countryside early in his life, and after a brief employment at sawmill, began painting landscapes. His influence came from naturalist painters, Ruisdael and Constable. In the late 1840’s, Rousseau had founded the Barbizon School named after his favorite region and landscape subject, and that included other artists such as Corot, Daubigny, Diaz, and Millet. Rousseau’s work became well known and sought after in the 1850’s. However, he preferred to remain in his cottage in Barbizon, where he died in 1867.HERMITAGE museum collection The State Hermitage is one of the world biggest art and culture museums. Founded in 1764, the Hermitage comprises eight departments: the Primitive Culture, the Culture of Antiquity, the Culture of the East, the History of Russian Culture, the Numismatics, the West European Culture, the Department of Science and Education, and the Restoration Department.
