There are many depictions of this scene on pottery, statuary, paintings, postage stamps and even in the Disney Hercules movie. The person at the bottom of the scene is King Eurystheus who was so frightened by the sight of the boar that he attempted to hide in a large jar half buried into the ground. The person to the left with the shield and spear is the Godess Athena (Godess of Wisdom). Athena and Hurcules were half-sibling and she helped Hurcules with some of his labors. In Greek mythology, Hercules' fourth labor was to capture the Erymanthian Boar, a huge, wild pig with sharp tusks that lived on Mount Erymanthus. The boar was a threat to the farmlands and animals of the area. Hercules' task was to: Find the boar by listening for its snorting and stomping Surprise the boar in its lair Drive the boar into the snow using a spear Chase the boar around the mountain until it was exhausted Trap the boar in a net Carry the boar back to King Eurystheus in Mycenae
