Hydra is a Greek island known for its rich history and connections to aristocratic atmospheres. Henrietta Berk was born in Wichita, Kansas (1919) and moved to the Bay Area in the 1950s to further her studies in the arts. After attending the California College of Art, her first show as an established artists was in 1959 when she was 40 years old. Henrietta's work became a part of the Bay Area Figurative Movement, which established the development of abstract painting following WWII. Henrietta began to lose her eyesight in the 1970s. By 1976, her eyesight was failing. While she was not clear-sighted, her works from late in her career are still confidently rendered, with bold marks and strong compositions.
