Description: Signed first edition of author's first novel, published in 1924 by Knopf. Inscribed "For my old friend / Phil & my new / friend Julia. / Jim Henle" opposite title page. From 1973 NYT obituary of author: "James Henle, president of Vanguard Press from 1928 to 1952 [...] began his career as president of Vanguard by publishing a number of books mildly iconoclastic politically and morally. Among the best known were the writings of James T. Farrell and Vardis Fisher. Several of these books became entangled in bitter court fights on obscenity charges, including Farrell's 'Studs Lonigan' trilogy. [...] Evelyn Shrifte, the current president of Vanguard, called Mr. Henle 'a most unassuming and modest man,' a fact borne out when he wrote two of his three books anonymously. 'The Book of Marjorie,' about his wife, and 'Letters From the Corsican,' a satire made up of letters, of advice Napoleon might have written Hitler, were anonymous. His other book 'Sound and Fury,' published in 1924, carried his name."
