Description: This exquisite engraving from the Heath Edition (1822) of William Hogarth is a true masterpiece of early 19th-century art. Featuring the iconic figure of Hudibras, this print is a stunning example of realism and skillful storytelling. This is in the highly desirable Folio size engraving (HL). Crafted using the finest materials and production techniques of the time, this original print is framed. Plate size is approximately 49cm x 63cm (19 1/2in x 24 3/4in). Condition generally very fine. This is a fine copperplate engraving on the same original plate etched by William Hogarth, JAMES HEATH Esq R.A, printed for Baldwin, Cradock and Joy, Paternoster Row in 1822. William Hogarth illustrated the story of a sad-sack adventurer named Hudibras in twelve engravings (published in 1725/26). His source was Samuel Butler’s satirical, mock-heroic poem written in the vein of Cervantes and Rabelais. This original etching titled "Hudibras, Alchemy, Astrology, Magic. Plate 8" is a stunning piece of art that will add a touch of elegance to any room. This image shows the title character as he confronts the astrologer Sidrophel in a clandestine laboratory. Angry at the truths of his past which the astrologer has just revealed, Hudibras makes ready to draw his sword and attack. The scene is filled with details of the alchemical and occult works performed there: the astrologer's charts lie open across the table, joined by a globe, map, and tools of navigation and astronomical observation on the floor. At left, a small glass jar contains a miniature human figure—likely a homunculus, a form of 'artificial life' once considered possible. ArtistWilliam HogarthTitleAlchemy, Astrology, Magic.
