Description: This is an early 20th century ceramic hand painted in relief HB Hofbrauhaus, Munchen, Germany beer stein. Note the HB in the picture. It stands 10" tall, is about 4 1/2" wide at the bottom, 5" wide at the top to the outside of the handle and weighs 2 lbs. 6 oz. The pewter lid has a 1/4" crack, see pictures, which was probably done in the casting process. The pewter lid appears quite secure and the overall condition is very good, with 1 tiny chip to the side of the handle. The underneath has something stuck to it. The stein has the following engraved: C .5L, meaning 1/2 liter, HB signature between the 2 men playing cards, and on the bottom is #1403, Gesetzlich Geschutzt (legal patent) Germany. The 2 different inscriptions on each side of the stein translate roughly "no luck in life, no luck in the game, no wonder you drink so much!" It actually holds a bit more than 1/2 liter at 18 oz. This stein is unusual in color and design and I have not found another quite like it. It would be a great addition to any collection.
