During World War 2 it was common for American, British and other Allied pilots to land at Chinese air fields. Pilots carried a chit, or a patch sewn onto their jackets, just in case they got shot down short of the airfield. The actual text varied, but generally they all said: "I am an American (British, etc) pilot fighting the Japanese. If you help me get back to my lines you will be rewarded."
