Description: This is one of the proofs printed and bound circa October/November 2011, prior to the December publication. As you can see from the photographs, the title page, table of contents, Ron Moore's bio, the works list, and even the headers were still in flux. As originally conceived, this book was to be part of a series titled HARLAN 101, planned to run parallel to the BRAIN MOVIES series. That branding was abandoned after the first edition of SCYTHE. For the first time in 50 years, Ellison’s second novel returns to print in a substantially revised and expanded form. Also included are three of Ellison’s best long-form stories. This 336-page paperback features: The Sound of a Scythe, Harlan Ellison’s never-before-republished second novel—appearing for the first time under the author’s preferred title (the original publisher renamed it The Man With Nine Lives without Ellison’s consent)—expanded and revised by Ellison for this appearance. From 2009 until 2020, I was Harlan Ellison's editor, producing 29 new collections of his work as well as expanded reissues of his catalog titles. While working on these titles, I amassed a large collection of pre-release proofs—books printed to check the layout, proofread, or otherwise test the product before mass production—promotional copies, and finished product. In an effort to clear space and fund my next publishing project, I am now offering the last of these books for auction. Proofs my differ from the books as published. Sometimes, they have slight cosmetic differences—i.e. the spine text being adjusted slightly—or significant variations—i.e. the contents are in a different sequence or material was added/subtracted before publication—and I have endeavored to identify these variations.
