The 3rd Armored Division helped repulse the German Ardennes Offensive, became the first tank unit to breach the Siegfried Line, and the first tank unit to enter Germany. Author Daniel P. Bolger, himself an armored division commander in Iraq and Afghanistan, tells the story in a way that makes this book one of those you just can't put down. General Rose was a commander who truly led from the front. Often traveling ahead of his division with reconnaissance units, Rose was constantly in harms way with his men. In March 1945, he and his reconnaissance unit became surrounded by German Tiger Tanks and attempted to surrender. Standing in front of a Tiger with its commander poking out through the turret hatch, Rose apparently made a movement which the German interpreted as going for his sidearm. The German tank commander leveled his MP40 machine gun and killed General Rose. A sad end to a brave and selfless hero of the American Army in World War 2.
