Description: This is an antique hand warmer from China, most likely made in last part of the 19th Century. It is crafted of white bronze. It has a melon shape with four lobes. There is a raised motif on all sides of the object showing court life. It is stamped on the bottom. The lid is tightly fitted to the unique shape of the opening. The lid is perforated and has a wave motif medallion. The handle is delicately shaped in a wavy pattern. This type of object was used by Chinese upper classes to warm their hands. They would place a coal in ash in the bowl of the object and carry it. The hand warmer weighs just over 2 pounds and measures 4" tall at the lid, about 6.25" at the handle and about 6.5" wide. Note: When I turned it upside down to photograph the bottom, ashes fell out!
