Description: A set of four original vintage 8" x 10" WWII photos of the damage from a Avenger torpedo bomber explosion aboard CVE-75, the USS Hoggatt Bay. On the back, each is stamped "Official U.S. Navy Photograph / Not to be used for Publication" and captioned TBM Explosion with a date of 1/15/45. The explosion is documented in the Wikipedia entry for the Hoggatt Bay: "On 15 January, an Avenger, piloted by VC-88's commander, Lieutenant commander E. N. Webb, found itself unable to release one of its 500 pounds (230 kg) bombs during a close air support mission. As the Avenger came to a stop on Hoggatt Bay's flight deck, the bomb detonated, killing thirteen onboard and wounding fourteen others. A fire broke out, but was quickly extinguished. Harder to remedy was the noticeably concave flight deck, but nonetheless, flight operations resumed within three hours." These are all Type 1 original photographs that come from the estate of a Navy photographer aboard the Hoggatt Bay. They show that death could come at any time to these men, and not just from the enemy. One of the photos is of a destroyed sleeping quarters. Imagine the thoughts of the pilot trying to land with that bomb. Good condition with some minor wrinkling on the corners, soiling on the back, and curving. A sobering piece of history and a nice addition to any collection. I ship every day the post office is open with your item safely packed the way it deserves to be.
