Description: SOLD BY THE AUTHOR! Another new collection of true short stories about how, where, when and by whom Michigan's biggest bucks have been bagged, with one notable exception. That exception is a chapter about the highest scoring nontypical ever recorded for the state, which was found dead more than a month after hunting seasons ended. Other chapters are about state record muzzleloader and crossbow bucks, the highest scoring 8-point taken by a bowhunter, Leelanau County's best bucks and a unique nontypical taken by a hunter in the Upper Peninsula (UP). Still more chapters are about a father and son deer hunt for the books, the best year for booners in the UP and much, much more. You won't want to miss the chapter about the Michigan hunter who has 31 bucks in state records, including a number of Boone and Crockett proportions. Although this book and the other five in this series focus on the biggest-antlered bucks bagged by hunters in Michigan, these books also celebrate the storied, deep-rooted tradition of hunting whitetails in this state. Part of that tradition is the excitement of your first deer hunt, your first deer and your first buck. For many hunters, their first deer and their first buck will be achievements that will be accomplished at the sametime. For others like me, whose first deer was a doe, the first deer and first buck are separate occasions to cherish. For most of us, that first buck we are successful in collecting with bow or gun, regardless of the size of its antlers, can be just as much a trophy as a Boone & Crockett buck; not just to us, but to our friends and family, too. To confirm that, I want to direct you to quotes from Doug Redder toward the end of Chapter 4. That paragraph is in bold type,so it stands out. The words in that paragraph are some of the most important in this book. Doug was with his 14-year-old son, Mitch, during the 2007gun season when Mitch bagged his first buck, which was a spike horn. Later that season, the two were hunting together again when Doug shot a B&C buck. Yet, the spikehorn that Mitch shot made just as much of an impression on Doug, if not more, than the much bigger buck. Rightfully so. The first buck bagged by many Michigan hunters is a spikehorn, as mine was, but the size of those antlers does nothing to diminish the moment and experience. Nor should it. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has lost sight of that and so have a group of Michigan hunters who are trying to change part of our state's deer hunting heritage and tradition by not only making spike limits to deer hunters, but forkhorns, too.
