Grateful Dead Dick's Picks 16 Volume Sixteen Fillmore Auditorium 11/8/1969 3 CD

Description: Grateful Dead : Dick's Picks 16 Volume Sixteen : Fillmore Auditorium - San Francisco, California ( CA ) - November 8, 1969 ( 11/8/1969 ) : 3 CD : 2000 (1969/2000) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. ( GDP ) - GDCD 4036 : Fillmore '69 !!! ... Recorded by Owsley " Bear " Stanley !! : Very-Rare !!! Played by The Grateful Dead - Performed at the Fillmore West in San Francisco ( in 1969 ! ) - Recorded by Bear ( Owsley Stanley ! ) - Selected by Dick Latvala for " Dick's Picks 16 " !!!!!!!Enough said ?HA ! No, I wouldn't do that to you - because this Rock n' Roll History ! is way too much fun to not talk about ... Lots ! But I mean seriously, this is the very end ( arguably ) of the Heavy-Duty Down & Dirty Grateful Dead. All throughout 1968 & 1969 Fans were treated to the evolution & perfection of this unique, and often very-aggressive Grateful Dead style Live ! In my opinion, this performance is an Excellent & " Exact " representation of that culmination. You could probably even consider the February / March Fillmore run ( captured in the " Fillmore West : The Complete Recordings " Box Set ) as roughly the ' other ' bookend of this specific period -- but arguably even back deeper into '68 ( maybe all of it, to some fans ears ... ). But what I find so interesting here, is the fact that the San Francisco Scene was rapidly changing & was entering an extremely turbulent time on the live music landscape. The " Summer of Love " was pretty much gone by this point, and the bands & venues were experiencing rapid transitions through the end of '69, and deep into the early '70's. If there's one track on this Set that makes my point for me, it is " Cumberland Blues ". There was certainly no Cumberland during the Feb / March Fillmore run, but here it gently ( though still electrically ) takes the place of Mountains of the Moon - Doin' That Rag - Cosmic Charlie, etc.. And in many ways is so symbolic of the Grateful Dead's personal departure ( though still tight as a unit ) from the Bay Area music scene as they once knew it, and as it once was. The next thing you know, after some seriously committed studio time ( and frankly, ' way-of-life ' type studio sessions ) the Fans are soon treated to ( and blown away ! ) by the likes of Workingman's Dead ! - as well as American Beauty !! With this arrival came the Out-Of-This-World ' Acoustic Set ' performances, naturally coupled with copious amounts of Electric Grateful Dead. But to some, and for some good reasons / instances - it never really was quite the same. Though it was still an evolved version / vision, that continued to grow. For me personally, I don't think the Grateful Dead flexed their heavy-musical muscle quite like this for the next decade and a half. I don't think it even ever happened to this powerful of a degree, until the Early/Mid/Late '80's. And then boy ... did it ever-happen. Two reason in my mind, Jerry Garcia's decision to incorporate heavy-duty Boss ( Roland ) guitar equipment ( HM-2 Distortion & OD-1 Overdrive, specifically ), and Brent Mydland settling comfortably into the Band, and really providing that extra-umphhh ! You know, that extra Musical, Tone ( & Soul ! ) Muscle. However in the 80's, Jerry & the Band did indeed have to fight-off & battle the ' off-night ' thing, however at the Fillmore West in 1969 there certainly was no such a thing ! Hey, the Band might have thought so now & then I suppose ... but with all sincerity - my ears really don't !?! Even a little sloppy ... could get Hot ! - or even better said ... Adventurous !! Yeah - that's it, a constant Musical-Adventure ! into the ' unknown ' - while constantly still ' creating ' nearly all of the time. Live-Improvisation at its Absolute-Finest ! Back then, Youth-met-Creativity with the Burning Energetic-Desire to deliver the Raw-Heat ! for the Fans. And just-that ... is the Magical-Recipe ! the Grateful Dead cook up on 11/8/69 at the Fillmore West. Deadheads, this one is without question - a " Must Have ! ". A Total ! Must-Have - so ... Enjoy !!! And don't forget to strap on your seat-beat in your favorite easy chair for Disc 2 !?!?! Hey, you know - just a friendly Good Ol' Grateful Dead !! warning !!! Wow .......
