And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream ! " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! And, for " This ! " 30 Trips " 1982 " 3-CD Set selection offered here ... WOW !! - and you betcha ... " Don't-Mess-With-It ! ". As " Sheriff Garcia !! " is indeed In-Town !! Summer Tour '82 !! ... at " Manor Downs ! ". A Huge !! ' Call ' from inside ' The Vault ' ... for the " Heavily-Underrated " Live-Dead Touring-Year of 1982 !! And, at least for me personally ... This ! is one of my own " Favorite-Shows " of '82 ! Even though this self-admittedly might have dashed my lifelong-dream of 8/28/82 ( Veneta, Oregon ! ) being let-loose as a pro-release ? - but, as for that - still ... " fingers-crossed ! " - Ha ! But, honestly - as far as '82-Dead ! goes - I cannot tell a lie - as This-Show ! is just about as-fine-an-example as you could ask for ... as far as the Band uncorking a flat-out " Smoker !! ". As this is obviously the last-day of Garcia in his 30's ! - turning 40 the next-day ( at the Zoo Amp. in Oklahoma City - on 8/1/82 ) ... and Good Ol' Jer even gets an extra " Happy B-Day Jerry ! " sang to him by the crowd, just before Set II ! It's not on this SBD recording - but, it can be heard on the available AUD recordings. Kinda like - say ... the " Happy B-Day Bill ( Walton ! ) that you can hear on the '85 Fall Tour ( at The Centrum ). But, enough with " B-Day's " ... and now on-to " Rock & Roll !! ". As the 1st Set in this 7/31/82 Manor Downs Show is indeed a very-fine " Build-Up " Show - orderly & effectively to the Ultimate-Prize ! ( The Scarlet > Fire !! & The Dew !! ). And, the way the Band gets there is just what I would define-as " Glorious ! ". Alabama > Promised ! straight out of the Manor Downs " Starting-Gate ! " - with the Texas-Style ! ' El Paso ' being kicked-down in the 4th spot of Set I. And then ... just a ' Killer ! ' Bird Song !! - with Bobby & Phil ' Both ! ' trading licks, timing-trades & sheer thunder ! with Garcia. As this is the kind of Bird Song that you're pretty much ' always ' hoping for ... real-deep, emotional & exploratory. And, Weir gets it too ... drilling this one gently with passion into the Rooster ! And you betcha ... as Brent ! is sure on-board as well. All Over Now, Brown-Eyed Woman ! - and then on to the Big 1st set Treat ! - for the " Big-State ! ( well, you know - next-to this Bird Song ! ) ... Music Never Stopped !! - which, for sure sounds to be closing up this magnificent 1st Set - but then - wait ?! - no ! ..... DEAL !!!!! With Gar~cia !! putting the '82 Pedal-to-the-Metal ! ( Boss HM-2 ! ) on this " Heated !! " Set-closing version. Dirty, Gritty, Nasty ! ... & Beautiful !! And then ... WOWWW !!?!! for here-comes " Set II " !! And really ' Here ! ' my fellow Dead Fans is the " Scarlet > Fire !! " which is the ' Alpha ' to the ' Omega ' of the 1982 Touring-Year - which, as you already well-know comes in the form of the 8/7/82 " China > Rider !! " at Alpine Valley ! ( aka. " Dick's Picks 32 " ). As Jerry delivers & just ' drills-down ' Tightly ! like close to a half-dozen " Themes " throughout the inside lead-jams of this ' Scarlet > Fire !! ' - and it is simply " Remarkable ". And yeah ... very-similar in the " Attack-Zone " of the Legendary 8/7/82 China > Rider ! As this Scarlet > Fire, and especially the ' Scarlet ' borders on '80's-Dead " Perfection ! " - and it is truly one of the ' Banner-Examples ' of just why 1982 Live-Dead tends to be a little underrated to the masses - and just should-not-be. I mean ... go & ' tap-into ' a few of the " Other One " Rippers ! during this '82 Touring-Year ! ( like say ... 8/28/82 ! ) and this Dead ' Tale ' of sheer " Grate-ness ! " just goes right-ahead and tells Itself ! This Estimated > Eyes ! then follows ... and is shocking like - just as good ?!? - well, you know ... like darn-close. Let's just say " More ! " of that same signature Summer '82 " High-Energy ! ". And from-here ? ... the Boys could have just All ' mailed-it-in ' on this Red-Hot ! '82 Dead-Night ! - but ..... " Nope ! ". As the Uncle John's Band !! comes delicately & elegantly - just like it should-be in the '80's ... Born out of Drums > Space ! And you can just hear-it & feel-it that even the Band ! is giving themselves a ' collective ' pat-on-the-back for the Live-Musical-Achievement ! of " This-Show ! ". And then, Weir's on-it ( again ! ) ... feeding so-accurately off the Garcia ( & also Phil & Brent ! ) " Fire !! " ... steering the Ship of The Grateful Dead - into ' Truckin' ! ". And they are really-drilling this one to this Texas Crowds Delight ! And yeah ... then just leave it to Jerry !! ... as he calls-for and flat-out Hammers-Down ! This " Morning-DEW !!! ".
