Description: Presented is a beautiful Victorian 14 karat yellow gold double cameo brooch or pin. This piece dates to around the 1870s and was likely made in America in terms of the gold work, while the cameo carvings themselves are likely Italian. The brooch is set with two oval cameos carved in high relief, showing two classical Greco-Roman women in profile, likely Muses considering the fine lyre design. The carving is nicely detailed and well done, very appealing. The brooch has a yellow gold frame with ornate hand textured decoration in the form of an ivy vine wrapping around both cameos. At the bottom are two loops, where decorative dangles, medallions, etc could be added. The back has an old C style clasp. This piece is not stamped or hallmarked, but we have tested all parts with nitric acid and guarantee the frame and decorative elements to be 14 karat gold, while the backing where the clasp and pin shaft, as well as the clasp and shaft themselves, are not gold. This piece is in great overall condition. The carving of the cameos is nice and crisp, with no chips. The texturing of the gold leaves and decoration are likewise in good shape. One of the tiny loops at the bottom, where a dangle or other ornament could be attached, is a bit thinned at the bottom part; please view the loop on the lefthand side of the first photograph. The clasp functions well and closes securely. This piece weighs 6.9 grams. The brooch measures about 1 5/8 inches long. -jm Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
