Description: Here I have for sale a stated 4th printing of the first edition of Gore Vidal's the City and the Pillar, published in this well-preserved hardcover with dust jacket in 1948 by Dutton. The book is G+ to VG- with tight binding, clean black boards and gilt and clean unmarked pages except for prior seller's penciled price and prior owner's name on front endpaper. Significant darkening and foxing of endpapers but surprisingly very little on text pages. Slight cant to spine and some crimping and edge wear. The dust jacket is VG with some chipping on corners and some edge wear. A few closed tears and some staining and scuffing. Fading to spine. It is not price-clipped and is protected in mylar.
