A good Swedish “Barrel Knife” by Johan Engstrom of Eskilstuna, Sweden with nice curly maple or beech scales. Dates to some time between 1874 (when the design was patented) and 1915. The barrel measures approximately 3 7/8 inches long. Blade section measures approximately 4 1/14 inches long overall, excluding the lock spring and securing ring. Blade measures approximately 2 ¾ inches long, edge only. Obverse of brass blade housing stamped with arrow, the initials “JE” and the date 1874. Blade stamped “Joh Engstrom” with “Eskilstuna” underneath, now rubbed. Steel bolsters at each end of the barrel. Barrel body made of gorgeous curly maple or beechwood. Blade closes smoothly into brass housing. Spring clip functions as intended, securing blade and housing into barrel. Evidence of prior oxidation to one spot of the blade spine. Evidence of sharpening and some scratching to blade. One small “ding” to barrel wood. Otherwise in remarkably good condition for age.
