Description: Gloucestershire, Badminton, Kempson's halfpenny token 1795, plough depicted. Struck to commemorate the municifence of Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort (1744-1803) and his tenants, who sold their grain at subsidised prices during the bread crisis of 1795. The price of 9 shilling per bushel recorded on the token was far higher than the average price of 1794 which was below 7 shillings, but lower than the real market price of 1795, which reached as high as 13/6 in August, and was still 10/10 in December. EF, glossy, trace lustre. Scarce. D&H Gloucestershire 40
