Description: Glassmasters Stained Glass Angel Spirit Sun Catcher 1990 3.5 Inches Diameter Angel Spirit from the archives of the Smithsonian Institution This angel was adapted from a Christmas card circa 1900. Research traces the early traditions of exchanging gifts and messages of goodwill to eastern countries. Sev. eral centuries B.C., it was customary to send small gifts and greetings near the end of the year. These collections occurred at the time of the winter solstice, about December 22 on our calendar. The year 1843 is generally accepted as the date of the first true Christmas greeting card. By the last quarter of the 19th century, Christmas had become the major season for exchanging gifts and greetings. Stained Glass, an Ancient Art Stained Glass was first produced in the late 10th century. Small pieces of glass were attached to one another with lead strips, producing beautiful effects. Clear glass and glass enamels were introduced in the 15th century. Medieval craftsmen began creating complex designs by painting with colored enamels on a single piece of glass. Most earlier enamels were opaque; however, by 1650, Johann Schaper invented transparent enamels which allowed for stained glass to become truly an art of light. Today, the artists of Glassmasters use these same ancient techniques. We maintain a laboratory of more than 600 different hues and are continually creating new ones.
