Description: Gettysburg: What They Did Here, by Luther W. Minnigh, 1924 edition Comprehensive guide for the Battle of Gettysburg, with many pictures and drawings, and maps This copy remains in good condition. Up for bid is a 1924 copy of GETTYSBURG, What They Did Here. The Standard Historical Guide Book on “GETTYSBURG” with Numerous Maps and Illustrations. Written by Luther W. Minnigh, author, lecturer, and Gettysburg battlefield guide, published by N. A. Meligakes, Gettysburg, 1924. This softcover guide book measures 6 x 9 inches, and is 168 pages long, plus a few advertisements at the end. It is in good overall condition, with some expected use-wear such as some cover wear including modest paper bends, a small amount of paper loss on the front cover and spine, and a circular stain (from a coffee cup?) inside the front cover (see photos). This booklet does well for describing the battle, including its development and aftermath. Luther W. Minnigh was born in Gettysburg in June 1849 and was 14 years old when the battle occurred. During the battle he was hiding with his family in the basement of the family home along Middle Street in Gettysburg. After the war, he spent many years studying the Civil War, with a focus on the battle of Gettysburg, with that detailed research including talking with many of the officers and soldiers (both Union and Confederates) who served during the war, commonly at Gettysburg. This research long pre-dated this guidebook that he wrote. For example, in the April 3, 1888 issue (page 3) of the 4-page newspaper Gettysburg Compiler it includes a “Local Flashes” statement that “Mr. L. W. Minnigh has spent the winter preparing himself as a battlefield guide.” He served as a battlefield guide for many years – and knew the battle well (as reflected in this book). This book was published some years before 1924 (date not specified), since he died in Gettysburg in May 1905 at age 55, and is buried in Gettysburg’s Evergreen Cemetery. (The pictures include a copy of his 1905 obituary – which is not included with the sale! J) Buyer pays selected postage. The guide will be shipped promptly with payment.
