Description: City of Grünberg (Lower Silesia) (Prussian province of Lower Silesia NOW PART OF POLAND BRIEF HISTORY OF NOTGELD. Not can mean Emergency or necessity,Geld means money. During the First World War money was in short supply. To remedy this problem, cities, towns, municipalities and even villages were allowed to issue their own money. Nearly all issues contained an expiry date, after which time they were invalid. Notgeld was mainly issued in the form of paper banknotes. Sometimes other forms were also used: coins, leather, silk, linen, wood, postage stamps, aluminium foil, coal, porcelain, and playing cards(very rare). A huge collectors market grew, which was at its peak in 1920. After 1923 the printing of notgeld stopped. PLEASE LOOK AT THE SCAN CAREFULLY BEFORE BUYING.
