Description: Please note that the saucer is a beautiful match but is not the original to the JWK Tea Cup. There are a few spots of gold rub on the cup. Nothing in my opinion that takes away from the beauty. Please see all pics before purchase. Dimension/size The opening of this cup is right at 3.75 in diameter. It stands 2.25 high. Condition this cup is in very good to excellent condition with no issues to report. **The Saucer is Schwarzenhammer Germany with a Diameter of 5.5" it has a small chip along the rim of the gold gilded edge. See pics. Offered is a beautiful German JWK porcelain tea cup (no saucer) decorated by Josef Kuba. Kuba preferred to include transfer applications based on oil paintings by the French artistJean-Honor Fragonardthat mainly depict courting couples on his pieces. This JWK piece depicts Fragonards famous courting couple (the Love Story pattern). It is a wonderful pattern depicting four scenes of two lovers. Two of the scenes are repeated once and another scene is only displayed once for a total of seven scenes that appear on the interior of the cup. Each panel is bordered by gold gilt decoration. The artwork/painting in transfer is well done. In 1930 Josef Kuba opened a small porcelain factory and decorating studio in the city of Karlsbad (today Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic). His work was mainly based on pieces from the Porzellanfabrik Carl Schumann factory in Arzberg (Bavaria) or the Heinrich & Co. factory in Selb (Bavaria) although he occasionally used items by other manufacturers such as Hutschenreuther or Tirschenreuth. This cup bears a known JWK cover up mark on the underside of the cup. These marks were introduced by the German authorities to ensure that the buyer was not confused between the manufacturer of the plate and the artist (in this case, Josef Kuba). The beehive or Bindenschild on the bottom shows that the plate decorator was influenced by the Vienna Renaissance period. This particular cover up mark was used by JWK between 1930 and around 1945, identifiable through its longer or taller shape. Some people believe the initials JKW stand for Josef Kuba, Wiesau, however he used the JKW ever since he founded the business in Karlsbad. It originally stood for Josef Kuba Werksttte and that the W later matched 'Wiesau' was pure coincidence.
