Description: Bank of Athens was a Confederate bank chartered in 1856 and remained in business until May of 1865 when Union Authorities shut them down after winning the Civil War. Besides this being the rarest of notes, the slave vignette front and upper center is eye catching. By putting these images of slaves hoeing cotton fields, loading carts, or carrying bags of corn on its currency, the Confederacy affirmed its unashamed reliance on slavery as a fundamental part of the Southern economy. This $2 design features the slaves with a wagon load of cotton bales at center, flanked by a vignette of Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, crops, fertility, and motherly relationships gently displayed on left. Only 3 of these notes are known by PMG. A true collectors note due to its scarcity and historical significance.
