Description: Colonel Thomas DeWitt Milling [1887 1960] was a Early Bird member, a pioneering officer of the United States Army Air Force who began his military career in 1909 and was the ''first rated'' pilot in the history of the United States Air Force. Milling received his flight training from Orville Wright and was awarded Federation Aeronautique Internationale [FAI] pilot certificate No.30 on July 6, 1911. Although Milling was not the first U.S Army aviator he was the first to receive Military Aviator Certificate No. 1 on July 5, 1912. Milling also received the first badge awarded to an American military aviator in October 1914 and is recognized as one of the original 24 United States military aviators. Listed for auction is the autograph of General Thomas DeWitt Milling signed on a card. The autograph is addressed to a young collector, dated Oct 10, 1937, and he thanks him for his interest in aviation and the autograph is signed ''Sincerely Thomas Dew. Milling Colonel, U.S Army, Retired'' in black fountain pen. The card measures 5.00 x 3.00 inches and is in fine condition and will be accompanied with its original transmittal envelope. The autograph is authentic, rare to obtain and is a desirable example of this prominent United States Army Air Corps general.
