Description: Count Nogi Maresuke, also known as Kiten, Count Nogi, was one of the commanders during the 1894 capture of Port Arthur from China and served as a governor-general of Taiwan in the late 1890s. He was a leader in the Russo-Japan War of 1905 and a Japanese general in the Imperial Japanese Army in the Meiji Era and was a champion of nationalism, militarism, and imperialism. As head of the Peers’ School from 1908 to 1912, he was the mentor of the young Hirohito and was, perhaps, the most important influence on the life of the future emperor of Japan. Considered a national hero of Imperial Japan, Yogi as a model of feudal loyalty and self-sacrifice, ultimately to the point of suicide by seppuku (disembowelment), along with his wife, on the same day as Emperor Meiji’s funeral. Both of their sons had been killed in action.
