Description: The maps of the counties of Ireland are reproduced from two old atlases, George Philips' Handy Atlas of the Counties of Ireland printed in 1885 and Samuel Lewis' Atlas of the Counties of Ireland printed in 1848. Each map in Philips' Atlas is divided into squared-off areas, numbered down the left and right margins and letters along the top and bottom margins so that any given area can be easily found. The index following the maps list every area, place and river, indicating the county in which it is situated and the map square in which it will be found. Many of the small places shown do not appear on other Irish maps. The maps from Lewis' Atlas have been added because they help in determining which of the places marked are Church of Ireland parishes. Cities and towns are shown in capital letters, parishes are shown in regular type, villages are shown in italics. Baronies are shown in large capital letters. For each county the Philips' map appears on each left hand page and the map from Lewis appears on the corresponding right hand page. The index at the back refers to Philips' maps only.
