Description: A letter sheet from 57 Great King Steet, Edinburgh. Dated 4th March 1857. To Russel and Aitkin(solicitors founded in Falkirk 1818). Written by James Burn? on A Pirie & Sons watermarked paper. This is a rare internal usage of the 4d sg66 with an Edinb roller Type 4 cancel used between 29th Nov 1855 and 18th May 1858. Scarcity rating a D; i.e. not common. On the rear is a Falkirk receiving mark dated the next day ( wish Royal Mail would take note, ha ha) Also, in green ink, I believe. Posted Since 7.20 Last Night is in black. The 4d has a single wing margin. What makes this quite rare usage is that few examples are known with a 4d from the first Garter Series, used singly on internal mail. A further feature is the wing margin perfs. These appear to be doubly perfed. Examples exist of the Sg62 with double perfing and just a few seen with sg66. The sg62 double perfing is listed but the sg66 not (as yet). Whether or not it is double perfing this letter sheet, written in English, presumably about disentailing of land ownership is an interesting doc.
