Description: Nicholson, Bronwen and Roger Neich (1995). Gauguin and Maori Art. Birkenhead, Auckland, N.Z., Godwit Pub. "Published in association with the Auckland City Art Gallery." Gauguin periods in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands are well known. However, his period in New Zealand (Aotearoa) is but little known. He spent ten days in Auckland en route to Tahiti in August 1985. During that time he visited the Auckland Museum where he studied and made sketches of numerous Maori objects. Those works made a significant impression on him and Maori objects and motifs appear in his art for years to come. To mark the centenary of his visit, the Auckland City Art Gallery published this lavishly illustrated book exploring Gauguin's time in New Zealand and especially his exploration at the Auckland Museum. Check out my other listings of African, Oceanic, Native American art and art history, and other regions of world art and cultures for additional rare finds.
