Description: Book One of the Heechee Saga: Robinette Broadhead is a young miner who wins a lottery, giving him enough money to purchase a one-way ticket to Gateway, an asteroid hollowed out by the Heechee, a long-vanished alien super-race. Nearly a thousand small, abandoned starships are located at Gateway and huge amounts of money are promised to brave prospectors prepared to fly off in search of alien technology and artifacts. The controls for selecting a destination have been identified, but nobody knows where a particular setting will take the ship, how long the trip will last, or even if there is enough fuel to get back. Most settings lead to useless or lethal places. A few, however, result in the discovery of new Heechee artifacts and habitable planets in other star systems, making the crews extremely wealthy. Gateway won the 1977 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the Hugo Award, Locus Award, and John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Novel in 1978.
