Description: A novel about the brain and evolution, Vonnegut makes a case that shows that when it comes to survival of the fittest humans are most likely going to come up short. What is our downfall? Our oversized brains. Not only do these burdensome organs cause us to get involved in dire situations but when it comes to natural selection it is no match for the useful attributes of many other less intelligent creatures. This novel is hilarious and has the typical Vonnegut cynical but optimistic observations. It is my absolute favorite novel! It is set a million years from now and is narrated by a ghost who has watched the evolution of the human race. It points out how badly we are doing as a race but shows that reverting back to small minded animals would not be the worst possible fate. Unlike other Vonnegut books this does not address a specific human crisis but the overall flaw in the human condition. The characters are interesting but are not developed as deeply as he normally does. This does not detract from the book, but rather adds to it. A great read!
