Description: Full Length Naive Portrait of a Slender Young Lady, L. Findlay, 1855 Charmingly naive full length portrait of a slender young lady dressed in black and shown facing left. The painting of her face is delicate and shows her with dark hair braided and up-swept with a back bow. The pretty girl has a slight overbite which adds to her charm. Clothed all in black — dress, bow, shoes — she is possibly she is in mourning. The dress is detailed with gum arabic and has quite an intricate design on the bell sleeve. Her dress has a white collar and a small ruffle down the front. She is wearing small earrings and a brooch at her neck. There is a folksiness in her elongated torso and the somewhat primitive depiction of her hands — one holding a flower while the other wearing two rings. Painted in watercolor / gouache on card, the artist has signed the work “L. Findlay 1855” just under the hem of the subject’s skirt. The watercolor is displayed in a wonderful folk art grain painted frae, a work of art in its own right, if not a wounded survivor. Overall condition is good but not pristine: the card is heavily toned / darkened with age; some of the black paint is flaking (but stable); there is a light stain around the area of the girl’s waist; the painted surface of the frame is heavily scratched. A lovely naive school portrait, signed and dated, in a very hard-to-find grain painted frame — a great piece. Museum-quality glass, acid-free matting and backing.
