LAST BRAND NEW BOOK John Ham’s latest book on New York Central lines in upstate New York delves into the old Water Level Route between New York City and Albany in this 336 page laminated hardcover. John Ham, along with Roger Liller and Gene Dauner present a point-to-point mostly b&w pictorial from Grand Central north during the NYC’s finest hour in the steam-to-diesel transition era with a 32-page color section. Freight & Passenger operations coupled with terminal coverage are portrayed. Over the years numerous books have been produced depicting trains along the old New York Central Main Line between New York City and Albany. Early ones deal mainly with locomotives and equipment roster shots with some fine scenic views tossed in here and there. More recent publications deal with modern day diesel and electric trains. Other books have focused on the Penn Central, Conrail, Amtrak and MTA years. This volume focuses on the Central's "Glory Years" using a multitude of magnificent steam and early diesel photos taken along the Water Level Route by some of the most noted rail photographers of the 20th Century. Many of the images have not previously been published. This book contains not only superb New York Central photos, but images of connecting railroads and industries of all sorts that were served by the Central in one capacity of another. There are even little known mining railroads included in this volume. For example, included are the Peekskill Valley RR, the mining/quarrying on Breakneck Mountain, the Mt. Beacon incline, Burden Iron works, Fort Orange Paper, the Hudson River Connecting, and even the Albany & Hudson Fast Line. The fabulous b&w camerawork of William Henry Jackson is included. Over 650 images cover this trip up the scenic Hudson Valley. This is an excellent pictorial for fans of the New York Central and Hudson River Valley. Gloss paper.
