Description: This beautiful banjo I finished today October 22, 2024. It measures 37 1/4” total length, 11” wide, 2 3/8” side height and I have the bridge 25 1/2” from the nut in the pictures. This wood came from an old outhouse in north central West Virginia that John Lynch and John Collins built. John died in 1933 I believe. Mr. Lynch was a Confederate veteran and in his obituary it said that he served for the cause he felt was right until the war came to an end. This wood had square nails in it and the stain from the iron oxidation is still seen on this banjo on the body. I honestly thought as light and as wide this board was that it was American chestnut but it appears to be poplar. It had a hand hewn surface on the inside and saw grooves on the outer side. Even though I removed the surfaces I love the patina and rustic look of this. With the nylgut strings it got a good loud resonance and bright old timey tone. I decorated it with hand carved folk art. By hand carved I mean a knife blade not a dremel or laser thing. Since John Collins was one of my relatives I did carve my initials and the year and town on the side. It’s a nice solid banjo and light but feels good in the hand. The ebony violin pegs are set into holes that were reamed with two violin peg reamers and so that means the reamers cut angled an taper holes that match the taper and angle of the pegs for maximum string thickness. I would love to see the look on Mr. Collins and Mr. Lynch’s faces if I told them their outhouse ended up into a mountain banjo! Haha I will include a 5 page set of single space guidelines that I typed up back in July that explains more about me, these kinds of banjos and my favorite tuning etc. let me know if you have any questions and don’t let this one slip past you because it’s a dandy!
