Description: French Justaucorps Coat - Compagnies Franches de la Marine 1754 & 1755 Uniform Coat - Size 42 The Compagnies Franches de la Marine (translated "Free Navy Companies") were sent to the Americas in the 1680's to help protect traders and colonial settlers from Indian attacks on the frontier. Their numbers would be expanded over the coming decades, making them - along with provincial militias - the primary French military forces on the continent. In 1754, when war broke out between France and Britain over possession of the Ohio country, the French Marines were on the front lines.Although known for adoption of many local and Indian customs of dress - especially when operating in the wilderness on the frontier - the regulation uniform for the Marines consisted of blue wool breeches, waistcoat, and off-white justaucorps coat with blue cuffs and turn-backs.Our reproduction French Justaucorps coat is perfect for reenactment, living history, or display use. The off-white wool body closes at the front with brass buttons and features blue cuffs and turn-backs. Trim or taping can be added to the coat in order to replicate signify other ranks.
