FRED HOYLE — OSSIAN’S RIDE — Harper & Brothers (1959) — Stated first edition

Description: FRED HOYLEOSSIAN’S RIDEHarper & Brothers (1959)Stated first edition Condition: GOOD PLUS - - - ex-library book with protective jacket over original jacket. Usual library markings, including a card pocket at the rear. It may be the first edition of the title (a book club edition was also published with the same cover art by Hoffman, but had fewer pages according to ISfDB). About the book:The year is 1970. Sealed behind an impenetrable barrier in the south of Ireland, the Industrial Corporation of Eire startles the rest of the world with its efficiency, its brilliance ... and its utter ruthlessness. To penetrate the barrier is to invite a swift and silent death. Scientific reports on its methods of operation are found to be faked. One man is sent to challenge this mysterious and invincible syndicate. His name is Thomas Sherwood... About the author:Sir Fred Hoyle FRS was an English astronomer who formulated the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis. He also held controversial stances on other scientific matters—in particular his rejection of the "Big Bang" theory, a term coined by him on BBC radio, and his promotion of panspermia as the origin of life on Earth. Commentaries on line: For fans of science fiction that is based on real science. Way out but believable. I recommend all of Fred's SciFi. Another fun read by Fred Hoyle. The title may seem odd but it is the perfect title for this book, as you come to understand at the end. This is pure enjoyment that satisfied me with thrills, problem solving, physical danger, scary bad guys, plans gone awry, close presence with Irish countryside and an Irish storm at sea, beautiful women, courageous hero and an interweaving of science that stimulates my mind as Hoyle always does.In Ossian's Ride, published in 1959, Hoyle startled me by devoting one paragraph to an incredible description of the global warming end game. It was chilling to realize that this brilliant man, in the 1950's, had an understanding of what that could be.Hoyle gives you a great ride in this non stop adventure story, more speculative than science fiction, but there's a lot of science here. Maybe it's actually more science fiction than most, but delivered in a way that is unusual for the genre. An astronomer of some note, Fred Hoyle was the consummate scientist cum science fiction writer. His stories often began from a science-oriented premise. "Ossian's Ride" is one of his best, bringing an unlikely hero into an unlikely situation and following him through a complex plot-line, drawing the reader right along. Each new development is at once surprising and surprisingly inevitable, especially the ending. The title is that of an Irish local legend, set in southwestern Ireland as is the story itself. "Ossian's Ride" is one of those rare stories that one wishes to reread every few years. The Ossian books and Hoyle's book "Ossian's Ride" are really inspired by the Odyssey.I highly recommend this book!____________________________(I'll always combine shipping costs and refund any excess shipping charges for multiple-copy book orders.)For all "buy it now" items, please use ADD TO CART if you plan to order more than one item at the same time.______________ WOW!
