Franklin Library: LEWIS CARROLL: ALICE IN WONDERLAND: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Description: Franklin Library leather edition of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass," a Limited edition, Illustrated by Susan Lynn Palamara, one of the COLLECTED STORIES OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST WRITERS series, published in 1983. Bound in GORGEOUS hunter green leather with gold tooling around the edges of the front and back boards, the book has ivory French moire silk end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. Charles Dodgson, who wrote using the Pen name, LEWIS CARROLL, lived from 1832-1898. Educated at OXFORD, Dodgson was a mathematical lecturer at Oxford from 1855-1881. Carroll told these stories to the daughters of an Oxford Don and later decided to write them down. Alice is a little girl who dreams that she pursues a White Rabbit down a rabbit-hole, and there meets with strange adventures and odd characters, including the Duchess and the Cheshire Cat, the Lobster Quadrille, the Advice from a Caterpillar, the Mad Hatter, the Pig and Pepper, the March Hare, the King and Queen of Hearts, and the Mock Turtle. The Queen's stock response is "off with their heads" but the King pardons the offenders. In "Through the Looking Glass," the concept of time is distorted. When Alice encounters a queen screaming, she asks what is troubling her and is told the queen is about to prick herself with a pin. Alice objects and that a person screams AFTER the prick themselves. In a hilarious incident where Alice meets the White Knight (a character in the chess game of which Alice has become an unwitting player), she is thoroughly confounded by the spirals of thought in which the Knight seems to be lost. Alice meets the chessmen, particularly the red and white queen and three of my favorite characters: TWEEDLEDUM and TWEEDLEDEE and HUMPTY-DUMPTY. The story ends with Alice, who has the red queen in her arms, "shaking her into a kitten." The well-known verses about the Jabberwock, and the Walrus and the Carpenter, occur in the course of the story---an all-time favorite for children! 235 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
