Henry David Thoreau, who lived from 1817-1862, was born in CONCORD, Massachusetts, graduated from HARVARD in 1837, and later taught school. Thoreau built himself a hut where he lived from July 4, 1845, to Sept. 1847. Thoreau once spent the night in the Concord jail because he refused to pay taxes! First published in 1854, "Walden" details Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built near WALDEN POND, amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor RALPH WALDO EMERSON. The book compresses the time into a single calendar year and uses passages of four seasons to symbolize human development. By immersing himself in nature, Thoreau hoped to gain a more objective understanding of society through personal introspection. Simple living and self-sufficiency were Thoreau's other goals, and the whole project was inspired by transcendentalist philosophy. Thoreau wanted to live in harmony with nature. Some of the chapters are titled: "Economy," "Reading," "Sounds," "Visitors," "The Bean-Field," "The Village," "The Ponds," "Baker Farm," "Higher Laws," "Brute Neighbors," "House-Warming," "Former Inhabitants, and Winter Visitors," "Winter Animals," "The Pond in Winter," "Spring," and "Conclusion." The dedication page reads: "I do not propose to write an ode to dejection, but to brag as lustily as chanticleer in the morning, standing on his roost, if only to wake my neighbors up." 400 pages.
