Geoffrey Chaucer, who lived from 1345-1400, the son of John Chaucer, was married Philippa and lived around nobility all his life. When he died, he was buried in Westminister Abbey, the first POET in what is now known as the "Poet's corner." "The Canterbury Tales" is a collection of over 20 stories written in Middle English. The tales are presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together on a journey from the Southwark Inn in London to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. [Beckett was murdered in 1170 inside the Cathedral.] Chaucer uses the tales and the descriptions of its characters to paint an ironic and critical portrait of English society at the time, and particularly of the Church.
