A bit of history about this piece: In the late 1920's Frank Lloyd Wright was approached by the Leerdam Glassfabrik Company to create a line of glassware, dinner service and specialty tabletop pieces for commercial production in the Netherlands. The company's director P.M. Cochius shared Wright's ideals to achieve an optimal collaboration between art and industry. Cochius invited other like-minded artists to develop a contemporary design style, inspired by natural forms. Frank Lloyd Wright prepared a significant group of drawings for a variety of tabletop items, including a few interesting vases. Unfortunately, the modern crystal designs as conceived were impossible to manufacture with the then available glassblowing techniques. Eventually, one flower vase was executed in ceramic media, which was quite different from the drawing. All of the designs were based on hexagonal and octagonal patterns. Wright named the pattern 'Hemerocallis', the botanical name for Day Lily. The insided pattern on the Pinnacle vase can be interpreted as the fundamental underlying structure of the lily. Day lilies are strongly rooted in the soil, reaching upward with erect clusters of narrow, grass-like leaves, culminating in a vibrant, six petal trumpet-shaped flower. This reproduction vase is an authentic interpretation of Frank Lloyd Wright's original drawing for the Leerdam Glassfabrik Company. The full scale vase was made of high quality ceramic with porcelain characteristics. Both clay material and the glaze are fired so the vase can be used as a water containing vessel. Every reproduced vase was handcrafted and hand-glazed so each has its own character in size and color. Track Page Views WithAuctiva's Counter
