Narrative: The Market Place of the Innocents is so called from it being the spot on which a church, dedicated to the Innocents, formerly stood. In the year 1785 the church was pulled down. The fountain which decorates the centre of the market-place, was constructed in 1551: it formerly stood at the corner of the Rue aux Fers, and was removed to its present site in 1786. It was designed by Pierre Lescot, and ornamented with bas reliefs by Jean Goujon. In 1807, this picturesque monument was supplied with water from the Canal de l'Ourcq, and converted into a fountain for public use. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
