Fossil records of the first rays date back to the Lower Jurassic Period (about 150 Million years ago) By the Palaeocene Era, just 100 Million years later, all major taxa of rays had been established, they had no bones but were made from cartilage, they are noted for their long sharp spines on their tales (Barbs)This Barb is from a now extinct ray from the Miocene, 12 Million years old.
