The traditional opening of a folk story makes hearts quicken with interest the world over. The French-speaking population of central Louisiana is no exception -or at least wasn't, in the days before radio and television threatenedthe existence of storytelling as the traditional recreation of the commonpeople. Following the pioneer work of Alcee Fortier in the late nineteenth century,Dr. Saucier went, recorder in hand, into the hinterlands of Avoyelles Parishto collect stories from the very old who still remembered the tales told them by their mothers. Here are versions of familiar stories, about the same fascinating and varied characters - beautiful damsels, enchanted princes, wicked Grand Viziers, giants, and Blue Beard, Cinderella, Poucette ("who was no larger than one's thumb"),Minette, muddle-headed Foolish John, and of course Brer Rabbit and hisanimal companions made renowned by Joel Chandler Harris. There are demons and wizardry, wonderful feats of skill, fulfilled wishes, talking animals -all the variety of the wonderland of folklore.
