Description: Flow Blue Childs Pearlware Miniature Dinner Set Sauce Pitcher ASIATIC BIRDS with FRUIT Charles Meigh Staffordshire England 1840 This is a gorgeous miniature flow blue sauce boat or gravy pitcher dated 1840, originally part of a complete 'toy' children's dinner service. The tiny pitcher measures 3 inches across and 2 inches high with a scalloped rim. Brilliant flow blue transfer printed decoration finished with pearlware glaze, extremely well potted, to the standards usually only seen in full-size Staffordshire table wares. Decorated with a Romantic Chinoiserie image of Asiatic pheasants or oriental birds and a butterfly on tree branches and an abundant bowl of fruit, bordered with contrasting border edge. The gravy is marked an printed (partial) fake chop, used by Charles Meigh to emulate the porcelain-like qualities of Chinese porcelain. The pattern, sometimes called Asiatic Pheasant, is documented by Doris Lechler as pattern #223.The pattern is also discussed on page 113 in Milbourn's Understanding Miniature British Pottery & Porcelain. The tiny piece is in great condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Stilt mark kiln fleck border transfer skip and other typical manufacturing imperfections, original to the making, consistent with age. A delicate little piece to display in the finest dollhouse, a pocket size work of art! Children's soft paste pearlware flow blue of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after.
