"A tribute to one of the greatest women of the world. In cooperation with the Florence Nightingale Museum in London and the United States Historical Society, Museum Masterworks is issuing the official Florence Nightingale doll. Miss Nightingale is regarded as the founder of the modern nursing profession. She was a visionary pioneer who changed the way that the injured and sick were treated. She was an inspiration in the founding of the Red Cross. On her rounds in the wards, during the 1854 Crimean War, she carried a lantern to light her way and to examine the wounded soldiers. She soon became known as The Lady with the Lamp. " "The handpainted 17" porcelain doll is truly a museum masterwork, a portrait of the woman herself, authorized by the museum named in honor. Her coat and skirt are twilled cotton, trimmed with brown piping ribbon. Her jacket is closed with seven brown glass buttons, and three buttons decorate her shoulder as epaulets. She wears a pearl pin at the top of her collar. Her cotton chemise and petticoat are trimmed in fine lace, and her cap is of the same lace pattern. She wears painted black shoes with traditional black sheer hose. And she carries her lamp, her symbol of mercy and care."
