Plans for a tram in Nuremberg date back to April 23, 1864, when Theodor von Cramer-Klett turned in an input to the city of Nuremberg to obtain the operating permit for a Horse-Tram.Although the concession for a line State Station - Wöhrder Tor was granted on June 20, 1867, the construction was prevented due to the wars of 1866 and 1870/71. Only the application of the Bremen merchant Heinrich Alfes on 20 September 1879 was successful. And so began on July 11, 1881, the construction of the first Nuremberg Horse-Tram line state station -Lorenzer Altstadt - Plärrer, which was officially opened on 25 August 1881.In the same year, the network was extended by the routes state station -Maxfeld, Plärrer - Fürth fruit market and Bauerngasse - Plärrer - Hallertor - Main Market - Laufer Tor.The first routes were all single-tracked and created with alternative sites. In 1882, in addition to the extension of the Lorenzkirche - St. Peter - Dutzendteich and Laufer Tor - St. Jobst,a timetable was published for the first time on 15 June. The net grew in the course of the 1890s around the routes Fürth fruit market - Fürth Theatergasse,Bauerngasse -slaughterhouse, state railway station - Sterntor - Tafelfeldstraße - Aufseßplatz, anda link from Plärrer to Sterntor. In addition, after the stabilization of the operating results, the lines were double- tracked and in 1891 the first considerations for the electrification of the network were made. The success of the Nuremberg-Furth Horse-Tram was celebrated on their 10th anniversary in 1891. Proclamations were made throughout the cities and a great fan-fare celebration was had by all.The Horses that served so well were soon to retire also. Replaced by that new fangled invention- electricity.
